AMES, Iowa – Kaitlin Petrillose defended her pole vault title in record-setting fashion and the men and women's Track and Field team sent a number of athletes from prelims to running finals during Friday's action at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.

Just five of the men's and six of the women's 19 events were completed on the first of the two-day meet at Iowa State's Lied Recreation Center.

The fifth-ranked Texas women ended the day tied for first with Kansas State, each tallying 38 points. Iowa State is third with 29 points.

After senior Shanay Briscoe opened the scoring with eight points by finishing second in the pentathlon with a career-best 4,043 points, Petrillose won her league record third-straight women's pole vault title by clearing a meet-record 14 feet, 5 1/14 inches (4.40m). She also tied the facility mark. Once the victory was in hand, the sophomore went after the collegiate record of 14-11 (4.55m) held by Tina Sutej of Arkansas. Petillose had the bar set at 14-11 1/2 (4.56m), but missed all three tries, though just barely grazed the bar on the second attempt.
