USC senior Kaelin Roberts, a two-time NCAA Division 1 indoor champion in the women's 400 meters who also won an indoor 4x400 relay crown in 2018, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss becoming only the fifth female athlete in Division 1 history to win multiple indoor 400 titles and elevating to the No. 11 all-time collegiate indoor competitor and No. 14 in American indoor history by clocking 50.84 seconds March 13 at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. Roberts was the only female athlete to capture a Division 1 indoor title in 2019 who was able to repeat as champion this year. She joined collegiate and American indoor record holder Kendall Ellis, who ran 50.34 in 2018, in helping USC become only the fourth women's program to have multiple female athletes run under 51 seconds indoors, joining Georgia, Texas and Texas A&M. Roberts examines her history with knee injuries and managing pain and discomfort during workouts, and emphasized she was only able to train at 65 percent capacity during the indoor season. She expresses the importance of her patience throughout the winter, and how important it was to be as efficient in her workouts and races as possible, in order to prepare for the opportunity to win another indoor title. Roberts analyzes her relationships with both USC assistant coach Quincy Watts, along with head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert, and how her support system has been instrumental in helping her navigate through the pandemic, and learning how to perform her best in championship competitions. She shares how meaningful it was to also earn All-America honors with Jan'Taijah Ford, Bailey Lear and Nicole Yeargin with a second-place finish on the 4x400 relay, and how USC, which placed fourth overall as a team, will be even deeper outdoors, with the return of veterans Anna Cockrell and Kyra Constantine, along with freshman Rae-Ann Serville. Roberts also reflects on the first outdoor meet held at Loker Stadium in nearly 23 months and being honored during senior recognition at the Trojan Invitational, as well as her excitement for the Pac-12 Championships being held at home during May. She also shares her enthusiasm for being able to compete at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., for both the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships, along with the Olympic Trials in June.
