Florida senior Thomas Mardal, the Norwegian record holder and reigning NCAA Division 1 indoor champion in the weight throw, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss capturing the first men's title in the event in program history with his 80-3 (24.46m) effort March 11 at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. Mardal also elevated to No. 2 in the world this year, along with No. 3 all-time in Division 1, No. 4 in both collegiate and European indoor history, as well as the No. 13 competitor all-time globally. He also became only the second competitor to achieve multiple 80-foot throws at the Division 1 indoor final, joining Michael Lihrman of Wisconsin in 2015. Mardal reflects on how challenging it was to recover physically following his 79-3.25 (24.16m) performance Feb. 25 at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships, and how he prepared mentally and emotionally for the Division 1 Indoor Championships entering the competition as the significant favorite. Mardal examines his legacy among the elite throwers, not only at Florida and in the SEC, but in collegiate history, and the motivation to add to his career resume during the spring outdoor season in the hammer throw. He reminisces about the time spent in Norway last summer and the opportunity to not only spend time with family, but train and eventually compete from June to August. Mardal revisits his 243-8 (74.28m) hammer throw July 30 that not only eclipsed the previous Florida record of 243-5 (74.19m) achieved by Anders Eriksson in 2018, but also helped him ascend to the No. 3 competitor in Norwegian history. He analyzes his pursuit of the national record of 256-8 (78.25m) established in 2019 by Eivind Henriksen, along with trying to achieve the Olympic standard of 254-3 (77.50m). Mardal, who placed fourth in the hammer at the 2019 outdoor final, looks ahead to the outdoor season and competition in the SEC against Alabama junior Bobby Colantonio, along with Kansas senior Gleb Dudarev, who was the indoor world leader in the weight throw with the No. 9 all-time mark of 81-5.25 (24.82m).
