Florida long jumper Claire Bryant, who set the program record and produced the best mark by a freshman in the history of the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships with her sixth-round effort of 21-11.75 (6.70m) to place second March 12 at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to reflect on her memorable achievement and the deepest women's long jump final ever showcased at the meet. Bryant, 19, elevated to the No. 19 all-time collegiate indoor competitor and equal to No. 19 in American indoor history, along with matching the No. 10 indoor mark in the world this year. She reflects on the training she did during the pandemic, and making the transition to competing in the Southeastern Conference after missing her outdoor season as a senior at Houston Memorial in Texas. Bryant revisits finishing fifth with a leap of 20-9.75 (6.34m) on Feb. 26 at the SEC Indoor Championships and how much she benefited from competing twice at Randal Tyson Track Center before the national meet, in order to become familiar with the runway and be able to communicate with jumps coach Nic Petersen about identifying where to start her approach and adjust her step pattern when necessary. She reminisces about being in 10th place following the second round and changing her mindset prior to achieving a third-round mark of 21-5.50 (6.54m), which elevated Bryant into fourth place and assured her ability to compete in the final three rounds. Bryant examines the collegiate indoor record 22-9 (6.93m) produced in the third round by Texas senior Tara Davis and how that performance provided motivation and inspiration for her and the rest of the competitors to push their limits more. Following another personal-best effort of 21-9.50 (6.64m) in the fifth round, Bryant analyzes the technical aspects of her final-round leap, which not only solidified her as the top freshman in Division 1 indoor championship history, surpassing former Texas star Carlette Guidry in 1988, but also how it helped her move ahead of Shara Proctor to establish a new Florida indoor program record, eclipsing the mark of 21-10.75 (6.67m) that had stood since 2010. Bryant, a former U.S. Under-20 long jump champion and Pan American U-20 gold medalist in 2019 in Costa Rica, looks ahead to her outdoor opener at Florida State, and shares her goal to soar beyond 22 feet with a wind-legal mark during the spring season, and her excitement to compete at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., both at the Division 1 Outdoor Championships, along with the Olympic Trials in June.
