Winter Sport Student-Athletes Unlikely to Receive Extra Year of Eligibility from NCAAPublished by
After NCAA officials agree to provide eligibility relief for spring sport student-athletes, similar aid for individuals who had winter championships cut short last week isn’t expected By Erik Boal, DyeStat Editor Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported Wednesday that according to sources, the NCAA is “unlikely” to grant an extra year of eligibility for winter sport student-athletes, despite their seasons being cut short Thursday when President Mark Emmert announced that all winter and spring championships for all three divisions would be canceled as a precautionary measure to ensure the public health in response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic.
The NCAA Division 1 Council Coordination Committee did determine Friday that eligibility relief is appropriate for student-athletes in spring sports, although the details have yet to be finalized. In addition to indoor track and field, student-athletes in winter sports include: men’s basketball, women’s basketball, ice hockey, rifle, women’s bowling, fencing, gymnastics, skiing, men’s wrestling and swimming and diving. Along with outdoor track and field, student-athletes in spring sports include: baseball, women’s beach volleyball, women’s rowing, golf, lacrosse, softball, tennis, men’s volleyball and women’s water polo.
